Warp6 Error Pages

We added nicely styled error, offline and IE6 upgrade pages to Warp6

Apr
29

Today we want to present some small but nice goodies of our Warp6 theme framework. We added additional layouts to customize several information pages. You are now able to configure and style your own offline and error pages. Also you can activate a dedicated browser upgrade page which only gets displayed to visitors using Internet Explorer 6.

All these pages use the same clean layout and display a relevant headline with a short description text. Therefore we have added a separate error.css file which defines the general error page style. This also gives you the opportunity to create your very own style for system messages like error codes and an offline message.

Error Page

Warp6 Server Error 404 Page

Everyone knows the old fashioned error pages, they do their job but they don't look good at all. Warp6 has a solution for this - your very own error pages. So when a visitor requests a missing page the error page layout will be displayed with the 404 error code and a description text.

Offline Mode

Warp6 Offline Page

In case you change something big on your website or you just do some maintenance tasks you can simply activate the Offline Mode. Warp6 will use its error page layout to display an offline message to inform your visitors you are currently updating your website.

IE6 Upgrade Page

Warp6 Internet Explorer 6 Upgrade Page

It's the year 2011! Modern web technologies like HTML5 and CSS3 are used all over the world wide web. The majority uses modern browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and the latest Internet Explorer 9 and there are only less than 12% world wide who are still using the Internet Explorer 6 (which is about 0.5% of your website visitors). Like our previous theme framework, Warp6 has no Internet Explorer 6 support which means the theme will not look like it does in a supported browser. But with enabling the IE6 Upgrade Page you can tell the few visitors with Internet Explorer 6 that they are using an outdated browser and recommend modern browser options to them. As you can see the IE6 Upgrade Page layout uses the same error page style which is now part of every Warp6 theme.

What's next?

What do you think about the new error page style? That was our last teaser blog post about the new Warp6 features. Next is our first Warp6 based theme release on Monday, May 2nd. It will serve as an optimized and streamlined framework theme and you can finally get your hands on all the new features. Stay tuned!

I'm a little worried about dropping IE6 support totally, working for an educational / government institution. We'll see how the boss reacts to that prospect.

We already dropped IE6 support in January 2010. So it is nothing new. But it only means that our themes doesn't support IE6. Of course you can disable the IE upgrade page and add CSS to support IE6. So you can build a theme with Warp6 which works in IE6. Warp6 is very flexible offers all the tools to do so like CSS3PIE...

At the end of the last century a majority of institutions faced a new concept of cost cutting: e-government. And a fatal decision was made: rebuilding IT infrastructure on the basis of commercial, non-open source, bundled software. We are working for educational and governmental clients for more than one decade now. And there's just one advice left: upgrade.

Warp6 has no dependencies on extra extensions. The new HTML5 markup is very semantic which is great for search engines. The multi-column layout is source ordered as well...

This is all very good and I am eagerly waiting for Monday. However it is a little unclear what the plan is regarding previous templates. Which templates are going to be upgraded to warp6, and if so, when could we expect to get them? IE6 and Ie6 modded browsers are still big in China so I have to consider this. However there are extensions that can provide alternative templates and hide some modules from certain browsers so it's not too big a problem.

I think they said they weren't going to upgrade the older templates. But I hope they do, at least the 2011 ones, it would give all members five state-of-the-art templates to begin with, and it will also be very clear to everyone: all 2011 templates will have Warp 6!

Sorry guys, older templates will not be converted to Warp6 because it has a complete new CSS framework and HTML5 markup. Converting an old theme would be as much work as building a new one...

I agree, Milk is a starting point which I can modify for most of my needs. I have already used it for 4 different client projects. I would be thrilled to have all of the 2011 themes converted to WARP6, but even if it were just Milk that would be good. I would like to stay modern and begin to use WARP6 for all my projects but if I only have 1 template in my toolbox that makes it a-lot more difficult!

but otherwise your 2011 themes are almost build for nothing. Alot of people are holding off for the new framework so all your work with themes has been for nothing then in most cases. I would seriously hope you reconsider doing the 2011 themes.

Love the 404, what I normally do is redirect error.php to point to a article that has links to the search module, Modules Anywhere and some catchy picture etc...

Thanks for making it part of the framework...
