For the life of me I cannot figure out how to get the "horizontal" menu to work in joomla 2.5 - right now mine is one on top of the other with a horizontal line separating them... what am I missing?

Hmm, it looks that the horizontal menu actually works.
Maybe you meant "vertical"? For that you would only have to publish the menu in a "sidebar" position (as explained in the link above)/

http://www.shintani.ca/ - it is the top menu in the absolute postion.
