How do I Import xml data into my demo package wordpress site?

I installed the cloud demo package on wordpress 3.3 I have content I built on a previous template on a different domain that I would like to import into the new site.

Each time I import the xml files through wordpress, the site tells me that I must refresh the database. I click okay and them it takes me to the admin screen and the newly imported data is wiped out and it only shows the demo package data.

I appreciate any help.

Thank you,

Jonathan

Ok, I found a fix for the original problem here:

You need to delete 'install.php' from the wp-content folder.

This is the file with all of the demo data and if it is there the wordpress importer will not work, it just resets the demo data instead.

A simple delete of that file and you should be able to import your xml file without problems.

Hi David,

It works perfect with a clean installation... doing this:

  1. Install WP 3.3.1
  2. Install Yoothe template (only template zip)
  3. Instal WP Importer plugin
  4. Export data in production site.
  5. Import data in demo site.

Done... it works!

I have the same problem, but each time I got the demo content "reinstalled", even the widgets colors, fonts, etc... all as default demo installation.

Hi Joayala,

Thanks for providing an update with your experience. It's strange that you would get demo content and widgets during an XML Import on a clean installation of WordPress. That is unless I misunderstood and you were attempting to import on a demo installation.

If you would like me to assist you, please create a new Question so you can send me your notes using the Hidden Information section of the question.

If you are comfortable providing us admin access to your website, I would be happy to attempt this myself and see what might be going on. Preferably, I'd like to take your XML Import File and install it on a brand new copy of WordPress. Can you change the file name of your xml file to something like import-22342.xml (use your own made up numbers), then upload this XML Import file via FTP to the root directory of your public web folder? Then send me a link to that file using the private message notes below?

You can privately send us any information by Editing your Question, clicking the link starting with "Add hidden information" and then provide the access information.

Remember to include the following:

  1. Link to your WordPress Website
  2. Link to your XML Import file renamed and located in the root web folder.
  3. Admin Credentials for support to log in and review.

Let me know if you are able to create separate accounts to access your website.

Best Regards,

David Carroll

@Jonathan - Please review my response to Joayala and do the same if you'd like us to log in and attempt.

@Natalie - I've posted a response to your Question. Thanks for sending the link.

@Joayala - I forgot to mention, after you create your new question, please send me a link to that new question so I can add it to my Favorites to be notified of post updates.

Thanks,

I have the same problem. The details are:

  1. Cloud theme installed with demo data.
  2. Spent 3 weeks populating data and styling the site
  3. Backed up (thankfully).
  4. Took an Export from old site hosted at wordpress.com
  5. Ran Wordpress Import on new site.

The results:

. Firstly the import failed with some memory error.
. Ran it again and it seemed to work.
. On completion of the import I was asked to update the database.
. Updating the database resulted in my ENTIRE database being replaced with YooTheme demo data!!

Luckily I was able to restore XCloner backup (excellent utility).

I am not migrating to a different server, so post 1836 doesn't have any relevance. Post 1741 doesn't give a proper explanation either. I have used the Export/Import utility before (not with YooTheme templates) and never had a problem.

The problem seems to happen when the demo data is installed. Any ideas?

Please help.

I'm having the very same issue.

I've used the importer 100 times before, never a problem, but if I use it on a site that has the Yoo themes demo data installed it does not work.

Nothing is imported and instead it just resets all of my customisations and restores all of the demo data, which is very, very annoying!

I'm guessing the demo install leaves something behind that means the WP importer can't work - do you know what that might be?

Help! Thanks.

Old thread but for anyone else who happens to have the same issue, user nduk is right. Delete the install.php file and you are good.

Really sucks for me since my entire website was wiped out when I tried to add my old posts. Hadn't backed it up yet since it wasn't finished. My fault for not backing it up but yootheme's fault for not noting this somewhere....or everywhere with the Demo links.

This should be noted everywhere DELETE INSTALL.PHP in WP-CONTENT FOLDER ONCE FINISHED WITH DEMO INSTALLATION.

Hmmm.... Very interesting. Can you confirm if the posts from the Import XML were added to your new install of WordPress?

I need to verify this, but I believe the WordPress Export XML does not include widget content and theme settings. Rather, it includes only Comments, Posts, and Pages. Again, I could be wrong about that.

Also, have you considered testing this on a fresh install without any demo content?

Joayala,

I'm so sorry I missed your follow up link to your website. I've been getting so many updates from various support tickets I must have missed this one.

In any case, that's fantastic that you were able to get this to work. Please check your Question for some other comments I have.

Jonathan,

In case you are following this thread... I've been working with Natalie Brown regarding her import issues. You can review the very involved notes on her Question Post at: http://yootheme.com/support/question/1741.

Let me know if Joayala's steps worked for you.
