Display Summary or Excerpt on Home Page Posts

I have the Inspire Theme and latest version of Wordpress. Everything updated.

We would like for the body of our Home Page to display a summary of our posts. Currently it displays the entire content like an old-school blog would. What settings need to be selected to make it show something like the title and the excerpt or a short summary with a read-more option?

I saw this asked in a couple other threads however no reasonable answer was provided. This is pretty common functionality with most themes we have implemented. Really would be surprised if this theme doesn't support it.

Yootheme has the worst support in the business. I can't believe I keep buying their themes.

I agree with comments about support and product. These are great themes and great framework but it is bad for business to neglect customers on support forum.

11 days since the post and Zero answers. Not trying to be hard on you guys but this is really poor with regard to response time.

Chris thanks for your input. I really like the look of their themes but it starts to get frustrating when you have poor documentation and quite honestly the only method for actual support is a forum that you don't get responses on. If you have a boss or someone you are doing a project for they really don't accept "hey im waiting on an answer for 2 or 3 weeks to do something that is actually pretty simple"

I assume the Yoo staff will eventually read this. I want to make you better because I do like your themes but at this point till I see better support I can't use any of them and can't renew due to lack of support response.

I hope they knock out this answer and make me a believer again. I really hope it is something simple and they make me look like a fool with their response... just not sure if that is going to happen.

Ok -I found what to do.

You need to edit the file yoo_inspire_wp/warp/systems/wordpress/layouts/_post.hph

replace line 25:
<?php the_content(''); ?>

with
<?php the_excerpt(''); ?>

It really should be in the option and documentation.

I hope this helped, it is working well for me.

Bad support? Welcome to the world of YooThemes! Occasionally you get a very quick response (last night help arrived really quickly thank you Michael Maass) but generally support is woefully bad and the documentation for YooThemes novices....oh yeah, what documentation for YooThemes novices!

It is such a shame, as I have said before, their great product is so severely compromised by their awful customer service and support! They wont stay in business if they don't get it sorted.

I agree! I really like the Yootheme templates, framework and products, yet if you cannot get support to customize them for your client in a timely fashion, then they make you look bad. I recently switched over to using WPMU Dev for my Wordpress websites and their support is same day! Check it out, I can get you a discount if anyone is interested!

This thread made me sad. So many unsatisfied customers, and not a single reply from the Yootheme.

Just like the majority of customers i have not got any answers on my questions. By pure curiousity i decided to browse through all the personal profiles of the support team, and the situation was worse than expected. The "weekly answered" statistics last three month is no less than a disaster.

It´s a pity to see such great products (framework and themes), by far having the worst support at the market. I supose it´s okey for professionals, but any guy like me with very limited css knowledge, simply can not manage without help.

Well i supose i am forced to go back to Mysitemyway.com since they actualy manage to reply the customers.

@vincent.guyaux,

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH for posting this quick and simple solution!!! I have been wondering how to do this as well because it seemed pointless to fill the excerpt field it nothing was going to call it; plus it made it pointless to click on the "continue reading" if you already read the whole post : /

I agree, this should be an option like how many posts per page. Thanks!

I know this is a very old thread but Just thought I'd share that on another forum post someone mentioned there is a more tag in the visual editor of wordpress which can truncate the posts in the category view. I'm using it for now.

There is no need to change the core files if you want to display the excerpt instead of content on homepage/archive pages. See my answer on this thread .
